Like them? We are enthusiastic about them. We are proud of them, for they carry abroad the message that, in an age of detachment, conviviality and generosity are qualities to be cherished. Those qualities are reflected in these houses: in the food that awaits you in some, the sheer scale of others, the beauty of most, the humour, the intimacy of many. The owner may pop over to ask you in for a drink or a meal. You may be swept up into the bosom of the family that owns the place, or left alone to live out your weeks in seclusion and peace. You may borrow a canoe and a bike, pop a side of beef into the owner’s own fridge, pick vegetables from their garden and fruit from their orchard. They will tell you what to avoid and what to do, where to eat and where to play.
